Since the founding of the association in 1899 the prerequisites for membership of the Bernkasteler Ring have been “growing the right variety (Riesling), quality of the sites, thorough care in the management of the vineyards with particular focus on the cultivation of Riesling on steep slopes of slate, and the quality of the wines.”

These principles still apply today, without exception, more than 100 years later.

Particularly stringent criteria apply to the production of our wines with the designation “Grosses Gewächs”, the premium line of dry wines of the Bernkasteler Ring. These Grand Cru wines come from the best sites of the steep slopes and are distinguished by their exceptional aging potential. To be awarded the status of “Grosses Gewächs”  selective hand-harvesting, a restriction of yields to 50 hl/ha and the passing of a stringent sensory examination are required.

The highlight of our season is the auction of Riesling wines held every year in September. This is where wine lovers get the opportunity to bid for the most noble crus of the present vintage as well as some selected rarities. In order to make sure that only the very best wines are admitted, these are scrutinised twice beforehand in blind tastings by a highly qualified professional panel.
