Wine estate Gessinger

For ten generations Riesling has been the foundation of our family and its wine estate. First documented evidence goes back to the year 1680 and since then, if not even before, our family has been making and growing wine in Zeltingen without interruption at the Middle Mosel.

Alfred Gessinger has the experience of 40 years work in the vineyard and the cellar and has passed on his enthusiasm to his daughter Sarah, who took over as owner in 2013, continuing the family tradition.

Quality doesn’t happen by chance…

Quality, not quantity, is our credo! That is why we have not interfered with the soil in our vineyards for the last 35 years. We trust the earth and the vines to flourish as an ecological unit, drawing on decomposed organic material and the work of microorganisms for nourishment.
This philosophy continues in the cellar: We are only there to assist in achieving optimum results. Every Fuder (cask) is left get on with its own individual fermentation carried out by the naturally ambient yeasts.
This is the only way to develop the specific aromas inherent to the respective sites. Give time, take time: Every individual cask gets exactly the time it needs to unfold its quality – with economical aspects frequently only a secondary consideration.

Eichelmann 2011

„Although the estate has been a member of the Bernkasteler Ring for many years, recognition of the quality of its wines has been a long time coming.“

Highlights

Daughter Sarah is a certified ambassador of wine and culture and will be happy to accompany you on a vinous journey through the vineyards of the Sonnenuhr and Himmelreich. Whitsun we open the cellar doors at our historic vaults in the centre of Zeltingen for our annual tasting of the most recent vintage as well as some older wines and rarities. On Whit Sunday we conduct a guided tour through the vineyards of Zeltingen, including a tasting.

Attractions in and around Zeltingen-Rachtig include Kurköln, Deutschherren and the Zeltinger Sortengarten (Varietal garden).

Tasting and sales

By prior arrangement we can offer tastings at our estate in the Moselstrasse or at the historic cellar of the former estate building in the Fährstrasse. At the latter we can accommodate up to 65 participants.

The old cellar dates back to 1709 and is certainly worth a visit as an idyllic tasting venue or when open as a tavern around harvest time.

Accomodation at the estate

If you would like to get to know our wines in a relaxed atmosphere, why not stay in our comfortable guest rooms or our holiday flat? Here you can switch off, go for cycle rides or simply walk through the beautiful vineyards and forests. A cycle ride along the Mosel at the foot of breath-taking slopes is a unique experience.

Our modern and tastefully decorated guest rooms are furbished with shower, WC and balcony to ensure a comfortable stay. We provide a lavish breakfast, which will set you up for the day. On warm days you can take breakfast on our sun terrace, otherwise in the breakfast room. If you come without a car, we offer you free transfer to and from Wittlich station.

Winemaker Alfred Gessinger would be delighted to welcome you for a tasting at the vaults of the romantic old cellar building.
