Wine estate Bastgen

We love to work outdoors, at one with nature, and we truly treasure the steep slopes of our vineyards with their weathered slate soils as our most prized assets. Taking care of the vines with our own hands, we are rewarded with some very special fruit. You have to respect nature when you tend to your vines, but at the same time you need to be fully committed to getting the best possible results.

Bio-organic viticulture

We spread farmyard manure and compost in the vineyard to stimulate microorganic activity in the soil. The resistance of foliage and grapes to disease is improved by the regular application of natural strengthening compounds such as silicic acid, organic water-dispersing sulphur dust and plant extracts. Sowing the seeds of wild herbs brings the vineyard into full bloom. For the very reason that vines are grown in an intensive culture, we need to provide diversity of flora and fauna. Synthetic sprays which penetrate the plants, herbicides and chemical fertilisers are detrimental to nature, grapes and, last but not least, to our own body if we are exposed to them in our work on the steep slopes. After all, our health is also important so we can enjoy taking care of the vineyard personally.

And what is important to you? Probably most of all the quality of the wine, you want to enjoy it. But at some stage in our life we also realised that quality is more than just tasting good. It’s also about all the things that happen before the wine gets into the glass. We have made our decision: bio-organic cultivation, artisanal care, steep slopes and slate, that’s what quality means to us. And that’s what you should taste in our wines!

Stuart Pigott

"Bastgen-Riesling is as pure as a mountain stream – wine from another planet."
