29. April 1899

On April 29th 1899 Dr A Schmitz, Anton Thanisch, Jac Thanisch, Nic Geller, Peter Tapprich, Peter Schmitgen and E Leutzgen founded “ die Vereinigung der Weinbergsbesitzer der Mittelmosel“ (Association of vineyard owners of the Middle Mosel).

The seven founder members set themselves the target to produce natural wines of high quality and offer these wines grown and produced by themselves for sale at auction in Bernkastel. They passed a statute the basics of which still apply today. It’s not the size of the estate which is relevant for admission, but the variety (Riesling), the rating of the site and the quality of winegrowing and winemaking. The estates submit themselves to a self-imposed control of stringent standards in terms of quality and correctness of trading.
