From the standpoint of chronology, the history of the oldest wine auction association of the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer river o
valleys can be quickly told. On the other hand, the stories about the wine estates that created that history would fill o
volumes. The Bernkasteler Ring has been committed to Riesling wine for more than 100 o
years. This attitude has been instrumental in giving the wines their distinctive character. That same attitude is   o
manifestin the aspiration to make top-quality wines that provide the Mosel with national and international prestige as one o
of the best wine-growing regions in the world. o
On the 29th of April in 1899 the wine estate owners Schmitz, Thanisch, Geller, Taprich, Schmitgen and Leutzgen o
founded the "Vereinigung der Weingutsbesitzer der Mittelmosel" (Association of Wine Owners of the Middle Mosel) for  o
the purpose of "bringing their estate-grown and estate-bottled wines to auction in Bernkastel". The articles of association o  You can request the brochure
that were drawn up at that time still have validity today, emphasizing that not the size of the wine estate is important, but o  "100 Years of the Bernkasteler Ring"
rather "the kind of grape (the Riesling), the excellence of the vineyard location, and the carefulness of grape cultivation o  Contact
and wine production". The wine estates at that time made themselves subject to rigid self-imposed controls and to  o
proper behaviour in the market. o
1901 The first auction took place in Bernkastel-Kues. In the following years - with few exceptions – the auctions took o
place annually. Time and time again these auctions brought record prices. 1924 Wines of the vintage 1921 were o
auctioned by the bottle, and all auction wines were labelled with a uniform neck label. 1952 The wines to be auctioned o
were required to pass through an internal qualifying test and were subjected to pre-sampling by selected wine o
commissioners.1997 Two dry berry selection wines achieved the highest price ever recorded at an auction,  o
1400 German Marks per bottle. 2003 a year of superlatives. One wine estate of the Bernkasteler Ring achieved the  0
absolute record of 331° Oechsle of must weight on the Oechsle Scale, which measures the sugar content of   0
 unfermented grape must... 0
